When some people hear the word intimacy, they think of just one thing:
Physical intimacy.
While physical affection is certainly a beautiful and important part of a thriving relationship…
…it’s only one piece of having a deeply intimate partnership.
In fact, many couples tell us they want “more intimacy” without realizing there are several different ways we can nurture it.
When one area begins to weaken, the relationship can feel more distant, even if the other areas are doing well.
Let’s explore four forms of intimacy that help relationships flourish.
1. Emotional Intimacy
This is the ability to openly share your thoughts, feelings, fears, hopes, and dreams with one another.
It’s built every time you feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted.
Without emotional intimacy, it’s possible to live together for years while feeling emotionally alone.
2. Physical Intimacy
Physical intimacy is much broader than sexual intimacy.
It includes holding hands, long hugs, a kiss before leaving for work, or sitting close on the couch.
Research shows that affectionate touch increases oxytocin, often called the “bonding hormone,” helping us feel safer and more connected with one another.
3. Mental Intimacy
Mental intimacy is created through meaningful conversations, sharing ideas, talking about books, podcasts, dreams, goals, current events, or fascinating questions, and learning how each other thinks.
One of the most beautiful gifts you can offer your partner is genuine curiosity and interest in how they see things.
4. Spiritual Intimacy
This looks different for every couple. For some, it’s praying together. For others, it’s meditating, spending time in nature, serving others, reading something inspiring, or simply reflecting together on what gives life purpose.

Spiritual intimacy is about making life meaningful together, and often reminds us that our relationship is part of something bigger than ourselves.

Here are some reflection questions we invite you to explore together, with open hearts:
1. If you were to rank these 4 kinds of intimacy in order of their importance to you, what order would you put them in and why?
2. When it’s missing, which form of intimacy impacts you the most? How does it impact you?
3. On a scale of 1-10, how fulfilled do you feel in each of these 4 areas of intimacy?
*Note: you will most likely have different responses to this question, and that is completely normal. There’s no right or wrong answer. It’s simply how things feel for you.
4. What would it take to deepen these 4 forms of intimacy for you?
