Dependability and the Nervous System

Dependability is one of those qualities in a relationship that shapes how safe and connected love feels.

And it’s not only about dependability for the big and dramatic moments or grand gestures…

…but the everyday follow-through.

If you’ve experienced an inconsistency in someone else’s words and behaviors, you probably know some of these familiar feelings:

uneasiness…

disappointment…

less relaxed…

anxious, worried…

stressed…

hypervigilant…

discouraged…

less open.

Often, the partner who isn’t following through has good intentions and doesn’t in any way want to cause harm.

In fact, they likely tell themselves something like:

“It’s okay if I do it later than I said, as long as I eventually do it.”

or

“It’s no big deal. They know I love them.”

Or maybe, if this has become a challenge in your relationship that has created conflict and resentment, stories may evolve into things like…

“It’s not really my problem. This is their issue.”

or

“It’s not like I don’t care, so they shouldn’t be upset.”

or

“They can still count on me, even if I don’t always follow through.”

This inner dialogue is incredibly common and, again, often not the result of someone not caring about the other.

This is some loving encouragement to see this through an attachment lens.

When it comes to attachment science, the entire state of our nervous system is intimately connected to whether or not we can rely on another, emotionally and logistically.

So what’s key to know:

Dependability isn’t just about the task. It’s about the emotional impact.

In other words, following through communicates to the nervous system:

“You matter.”

“You can relax with me.”

“My word is safe.”

And when follow-through doesn’t happen, what often gets shaken is trust (not simply logistics).

And then, the partner who feels uneasy may…

Stop asking.

Stop relying.

Stop sharing hopes or needs as openly.

Stop relaxing and trusting that you’ve got this.

>> And this isn’t because they don’t love you…

but because their nervous system has learned it’s safer not to expect.

This isn’t about blame or perfection, and every relationship misses the mark sometimes.

What matters most is:

(1) developing an attachment-based lens, as this creates more compassion and understanding and

(2) repair.

If you are someone who struggles to be dependable, recognizing the very real impact this has on your beloved is key.

Our loving encouragement is, rather than getting defensive or thinking they are overreacting…

…lean in to offer your partner empathy, to take responsibility, and to freely give an apology when you don’t follow through (of course, give yourself grace and give them some compassion too).

This can make a huge difference.

Without a doubt, consistency builds safety.

And safety is what allows love to stay soft and our hearts to stay open.
